What involves binging and purging?
Bulimia is an eating disorder. It is characterized by uncontrolled episodes of overeating, called bingeing. This is followed by purging with methods such as vomiting or misuse of laxatives. Bingeing is eating much larger amounts of food than you would normally eat in a short period of time, usually less than 2 hours.

People with bulimia will often eat large amounts of food, or binge, and then try to get rid of the calories in what is called a purge. This often involves vomiting, excessive exercising, or abuse of laxatives or diuretics.

These include self-induced vomiting (likely the best-known of bulimia behaviors), the misuse of laxatives, diuretics and/or enemas, and excessive exercise. Both the binge eating and compensatory behaviors occur at least once a week for three months.

Who is at risk for bulimia? Bulimia affects more women than men. It affects up to 2% of women1 and happens to women of all races and ethnicities. Bulimia affects more girls and younger women than older women.
What to eat after purging?
After binging, your blood sugars will be low. Therefore it is vital to nourish yourself to help stabilize your blood sugars. It does not need to be a full meal – perhaps some cheese or popcorn or chocolate. You will also be very dehydrated; so do drink some pure water.
Can you purge without binging?
Purging disorder is an eating disorder that is diagnosed when a person purges to influence body shape or weight but does not binge. It can be thought of as bulimia nervosa without bingeing.

Is bulimia face permanent?
It is ultimately fatal if not treated. Treating bulimia generally involves a form of therapy and an antidepressant and/or anxiety medication. After a prolonged period of regular eating, the parotid glands will most likely return to their original state.
